Darryl
I spoke with you yesterday re. unibond & I used it for the firs time & it went well but my design may be faulty.
My finished product will be a ply of veneers appox 1/4" thick cut to 4" x 4", and glued on to solid stock 6" wide.
In my first attempt I used 3 alternating layers of 1/16" thick walnut, and 1 layer of 1/40" walnut burl. A typical 4" wide section is cupped almost 1/8" on the burl side. Is this a problem when I glue to the solid stock? Should I run the 1/16" veneer paralel with the the solid or 90de?
If you tell me I need to veneer the 'under' side with 1/40", can I use 1/40" regular walnut, not burl?
thanks

Mike,

Im not really clear on your lay up and dont know how thick the solid wood is.

In any case, the best way to look at any lamination is that it should be the same from the center point out in each direction. Lets say you have a 1/8" solid piece in the center. On each side of this piece there should be the same amount of additional layers. If one side has three the other side should have three. Now, on each side they can be different thicknesses as long as the other side has the same pieces placed in the same orientation and order.

Hope this makes sense.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

If I understand, you want to make a veneer "plywood" that is then trimmed to 4" squares, and then glued onto solid walnut? If this is true, I'd suggest trying a slightly different procedure. First, make up a 3 ply veneer lamination using perhaps quartered walnut veneer, alternating the grain direction so the grain of the center veneer is perpendicular to the grain of the two outer veneers. An odd numbered lamination, using alternating grain direction, hopefully will stay flat. After this has been pressed and allowed to further cure overnight, you might have to run through a wide belt sander to make perfectly flat. Then press the layer of burl onto this 3 piece lamination. Once urea formaldehyde glue is cured, it is very rigid, so adding the additional layer of burl should not curl the dried 3 layer lamination.

Pressing all four layers at the same time is likely to produce a curved result because of the even number of layers. It would seem likely that after the glue cures the sandwich would not flatten out from its 1/8" curl.

Thanks Don & Darryl,
Yes these 4 x 4 medallions will be glued on to 1 1/8" x 6" solid walnut.
I see now that it is probably better to make the 3 ply which totals 3/16" thick first & cure over night, then apply the burl. This is going on to what are essentially columns for a library. The other thing I didn't mention is I am considering routing out a 4 x 4 by 1/16 deep recess for the ply to sit in? My reasoning being it would be easier to position and may make potential glue squeeze out negligable. There are 48 in total. I realize this may add significant increase in time.
In my sample which I will be taking out of clamps this morning I just clamped it on to the surface with pva but am worried in the long run if it started to detatch even just a little it would look chincy?
Mike
