I am in the process of making a checkerboard using parquetry that will have solid wood edging. I have assembled the pieces of veneer into a large square using veneer tape.

How do I proceed so that 4 edges of the veneer assembly are perfectly aligned with the substrate in order to get a perfect joint between the veneer and the solid edging when I add the sold edging?

Thanks

Howard

I would press your checkerboard to a substrate that is oversized on all four sides...don't worry about it's position.

Then cut your first edge. I would use a Festool circular saw with their edge guide, but any good circ saw used with a homemade guide that prevents tearout should work. This cut will be the most difficult, so be precise...the other cuts you can just sneak up on, so you won't have to be as careful.

Your next edge will be making a right angle to your first cut. I would use a crosscut sled at the tablesaw for this, but any method that makes a nice 90 degree cut to the blade will work - radial arm saw, miter saw (if you have enough depth), or a panel saw.

Then the remaining two edges can be cut at the tablesaw, since you have established two edges that are at a right angle.

That's how I'd do it....it's VERY tough to get a veneer skin to align PERFECTLY to a presized substrate....always press it to an oversized substrate and trim.

If you don't have a Festool circular saw, you could use a router and a flush trim bit. I have a piece of 1/4" plexiglas with a straight edge for this purpose. Band saw close to the line (you might want to score the veneer prior to cutting to prevent lifting the veneer), clamp the straightedge in place and rout away.

You might try a router bit with a downward spiral to prevent the veneer from lifting. I do this with my CNC router and hardwood veneer plywood to avoid problems at the top edge. If I need both top and bottom to be clean, I use a compression bit. This has an upward spiral at the end of the bit, and a downward spiral for the remainder of the cutting edge length. It is more expensive than a straight bit, but I get clean cuts.
