Recently, I have been laminating 2 layers of 1/2" apple ply together to create what I believe to be a fairly stable and flat 1" thick substrate for my doors and drawers. (these have been contemporary, flat slab door and drawer front type bathroom vanities for the most part) I then apply a 1/4" solid edgebanding to my appropriately sized pieces and then veneer the face and back with either paperbacked, or wood-on-wood veneers. I have used unibond 800 for each laminating/veneering step. My question is how critical is the relationship between the grain direction of the apple ply face veneer and the paperbacked or wood-on-wood veneer I apply to it? I assume if I were using a single layer of raw veneer I would have to apply it 45 - 90degrees to the substrate veneer.... but what about with these backed sheet veneers? thanks for any input.

In an ideal world, one always alternates grain direction. In your situation, I cannot believe that an already stabilized two-ply veneer would cause a one inch thickness of substrate to deform in the slightest amount. Still, veneering both sides of the substrate at the same time would be prudent.

Thanks for the reply, but what I mean to ask about is the relationship between the grain direction of the veneer that is pressed on the apple ply by the manufacturer and the grain direction of the paperbacked/wood-on-wood veneer I apply on top of the apple ply substrate. Do I need to worry about alternating the grain direction of an apple ply substrate and a pre-backed veneer?
thanks again, kevin

Kevin,

The grain direction of the paperbacked veneer does not matter in relation to the apple ply. I do recommend you run the apple ply themselves in the same grain direction to each other. Like Jeff said, make sure you put paper backed veneer on both sides of your substrate.

Sincerely
