I've mounted some 10mil paperbacked birch veneer to both sides of some 1" apple ply cores (drawer faces -- approx. 16" x 6" )using Unibond 800. I got good squeeze-out of glue around edges but I feel that I can peel back the veneer at the corners of the panels. I would feel better about the bond if I were using wood-on-wood veneer (or raw, of course), but are there inherent problems with the bond of paperbackers and unibond?
thanks, kevin

Kevin,

Unibond 800 works fine on paper backed veneer. Did you wait 24 hours before testing the edges? Unibond 800 needs a overnight cure before testing the joint. There may be other reasons for a marginal bond like too cool temperatures but I cant say without more information.

Darryl, thanks for the response. I was probably testing them a bit too quickly. The temperature can be a concern, though, but I believe everything was above 65 degrees before and while in the bag. But does the temp. need to be above 65 for the entire 24 hour curing cycle? The temp. very well may have dipped to 60 or so once I got the pieces out of the bag and out from under the electric blanket.
thanks again, kevin lynch

Kevin,

As long as the glue has reached the firm rubber stage of catalization its OK if the temperature dips down a bit. This doesn't mean you can go to 50 degrees but down to 60 would be acceptable.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
