Could anyone make a recomendation on a better way to adhere formica laminate to the edge of melamine/particle board? Contact cement seems to work for a while but then it comes off. Would polyurathane work better? Any recomendations on how to press something like that in a vacuum press. The panels are for shelves and are 24"x24" and only need one edge laminated. Thanks for your help

The best way is with an edgebander. Find someone in your area with an edgebander and they can do this in a matter of minutes.

Joe,

Without a doubt an edgebander is the best solution but if that's not an option for you regular yellow glue work very well on plastic laminate.

Its not really practical to do edges in a vacuum press but you could do it with bar clamps and a strip of solid wood to distribute the pressure.

As a comparison, glue a strip as you normally would, to an MDF edge. If it also comes off the MDF there is a problem with either the contact cement or the process. I've applied laminate to MDF edges using both water borne and solvent contact cement without problems. I've also applied hundreds of feet of iron on edging to the edges of melamine board with no problem. The melamine core is rather open and I'm wondering how well contact cement would work with it, especially if only one coat is applied to the core.
