Darryl
I have noticed that you always suggest using 2 ply when doing veneer over a solid edge. I have a couple of pieces that haven't been plyed that I check seasonaly against a strong light and haven't noticed any problem. I use primarily mahagony for its stability and the solid wood edging goes into the substrate (mdf) by about 3/4". When I get done with routing perhaps there is only 1/4" of solid material with veneer over it (pretty standard).

1) Would you do the glue up one ply at a time?
3) I assume if you 2 ply the top, you would two ply the balancer back.
3) I don't understand the reasoning. If the solid wood edge is going to expand seasonly, is an extra .025" of ply veneer going to stop the telegraphing.
4) Could I use a phelonic ply instead of veneer ply?

Gregg,

The reasoning behind a backer veneer between the substrate and veneer when going over a solid edge or joint of any kind for that matter is that at the joint there can be some movement that will eventually show as crack line in the face veneer. The backer veneer insulates the face veneer "taking the hit" so to speak at the joint. Will it always happen? Maybe not but I would rather be safe than take the chance.

As to your specific questions, I don’t think it matters if you glue the backer veneer to the substrate or to the face veneer. If you make a two ply and then apply it to the substrate the veneer on the back side does not need to be two ply unless it’s a cabinet door.

A phenolic backer is fine as the sub veneer.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

White and yellow glues are notorius for creeping over time on tabletops (where they would be most noticeable) and other edge joints between boards. Might be able to reduce the chances of joint telegraph under single ply by using a rigid glue between the MDF and hardwood edging instead of PVA.
