OOPS! Filled the subject and hit enter. Man I hate computers. Necessary evil!.Heres my problem. I made a top with a sunburst Curly maple pattern with a round Fire Maple burl center. Then wrapped the perimiter with 6/4 X 3" solid Walnut. Glued the veneer with Urea, and the walnut with biscuits and Gorila glue. Sanded thru the veneer just enough so the three hole tape is showing. AHHHHH! This was a very time consuming screw up. I have lots of veneer but not enough of the Walnut to start over. I am thinking of sanding off to the core ( Wide belt) and laying up the same pattern again only using veneer for the perimiter over the walnut. My concerns are 1) if I use a dark urea so the line won't show on the Walnut it may cause discoloration of the Maple if I use light color the glue line will show. 2) Cold creep. Should I use a two ply? I could change the edge profile to a drop then radius to help hide the veneer line meeting the solid. Or should I bite bite bullet and buy more walnut?

Greg,

Go with the dark catalyst. Because maple is a closed grain wood the catalyst color is really not an issue as long as you seams are good and tight.

As far as redoing the top, I would make a two ply to deal with the transition between the substrate and solid edging since you will be veneering over the solid as well. You will need to make the backer veneer walnut so it wont stick out at the drop edge you talked about making. Don't forget to re-veneer the bottom as well so you don't get warpage.

Good luck

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

//Sanded thru the veneer just enough so the three hole tape is showing.//

I noticed this comment...does this mean that you are gluing your veneer down with the three hole tape down? If so, this is not recommended. The three hole tape should be applied to your show face, and the side that gets adhesive should have no tape of any kind.

Just checking....maybe I'm misinterpreting.
