Subject : Which substrate to use?

I am planning on veneering a panel that is going to be flat on one side and concave on the other. The panel will be 20" wide x 38" long x 3/4" thick. The concavity will run the length of the piece and reach a maximum depth of 1/4". I have a couple of questions about veneering this. First, would it be okay to use plywood for this (like baltic birch) or would it be better to use MDF? If plywood is okay, would I need to veneer the piece with some backer grade veneer first to prevent any telegraphing of the exposed layers of ply from showing on the face veneer?

The panel is going to be used as the bottom shelf of a table I am making. If possible I would prefer to avoid the use of MDF, but that is just a personal bias. If MDF is the best material to use, I will certainly go that route.

Thanks in advance!

ploh,

I would recommend the plywood over the MDF. MDF is denser at the surface than in the middle so adhesion could vary as well as glue absorption. As you mentioned I would cross band the plywood before gluing down the face veneer.

One question is whether you can prevent warping. As the plywood is scooped out on one side tension is released unbalancing the panel. How much this will happen I cannot say.

Sincerely

Ok. The warping of the plywood is what I was worried about. I guess I will make a test piece and see how it does. Thanks!

As for how I was going to make the concavity, I was planning on making a jig for using my router to remove the material. Basically making a curved sled for the router to attach to that would run along a set of rails running the length of the panel.

I am curious how you will go about forming that concavity. A curved cut 20" wide and only 1/4" deep is a proper task for even the best (very large) bandsaw. Then there is the matter of smoothing it. Or perhaps you mean that one of the long edges will be concave and not the surface. That being the case, either ply or mdf will do.
