Think I remember reading a suggestion that storing "stuff" on top a vacuum bag might be the biggest cause of damage to them. I've always wondered how easy the corners on top cauls can make holes in the bags. I usually try to either round off those corners or cover them with rubber membrane. Are the bags so strong that sharp corners seldom or never will cause pinhole leaks?

Don,

Well, the 30mil polyurethane can stand up to a lot more than the 30mil vinyl can. I find that as long as the point sharp corner are even just slightly softened, that's enough. If you didn't do it at all the polyurethane will stand up to it but your bag will show little marks where the corners were.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

I use small pieces of West System Breather Cloth wrapped in West System Release cloth on the sharp corners of coopered panels I glue up (using epoxy obviously) in a vacuum bag. I was starting to see some fatigue before I started doing this.

Hope this helps.

Plain ol' everyday cardboard makes a great bag protector. I get it free from my plywood supplier who gets it as cover sheets on bundles of ply. As an added bonus, it keeps glue off the bag.
