I have a newbie question. I am doing a curved frame and panel door, with the panel being veneer(lacewood)What is my best option for a substrate?
If I used bendable ply, can I veneer it flat then bend ply as needed or do I need to bend ply around a form and then press?
Thanks.

Thomas,

Since I assume your panel wont be very thick try 1/8" italian bending poplar. Use at least three layers if you can.

Bending ply really stiffens up if you veneer them prior to bending so I suggest you make the curved plywood and then veneer it.

Thanks very much Darryl.
Do you feel that the 1/8 poplar is a better substrate than 1/4 mdf(my supplier has 1/4 mdf with saw curfs so it will bend) or 3/8 bendable luan?
Thanks again.

Thomas,

I prefer the 1/8" bending poplar but the 1/4 bendable MDF is a good surface as well. I would assume you would put two sheets together with the kerfs facing each other. Of course this would give you a 1/2" panel thickness and you haven't said how thick they would be so I don't know which material will work for you.

Sincerely
