Subject : help with applying Mesquite veneer

I am using mesquite veneer for the curved end panels on a custom sleigh bed. Mesquite is known for its cracks, knots, etc. These all add to the uniqueness of the piece however when using veneer I am curios how to fill these. I typically use Unibond 800 for my veneer projects and am concerning about the adhesive showing in the cracks and filling them( which they will eventually be filled with epoxy) I am using Timberflex as a substrate. also the Mesquite appears to be somewhat brittle. should it be treated with something prior to application?

Martin,

Is your mesquite commercially sliced or something you re-saw yourself? I can answer you questions better knowing this.

If you use the dark catalyst the cracks the Unibond 800 fills should blend in pretty well. You can also tint the glue with water or alcohol soluble Analine dyes to get the color even closer.

How tight of a radius is the timberflex bending around, and are you veneering the timberflex before or after its bent?

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Darryl, thanks for the reply. It is commercially sliced at 1/42" or so. It is going to be bent around an ~8" radius at the tightest and the timber flex will be preformed before veneering. Thanks for your help.

Martin,

I don't think you need to do anything special with the mesquite veneer since its so thin and your radius is not that tight.

Maybe try it with a sample just to be sure but I think your fine as is.

Sincerely
