I have a project that requires the wrapping of a veneer around a 1 5/16\" dowel.
I may be doing quite a few of these in the future if I can find a way to do this easily.
I see the veneer softener and I feel that this will help quite a bit but I don't know how to wrap the veneer and hold it in place completely while its drying.
Anybody have a suggestion?

If it's only 1 5/16", is may be easier to get get some 8/4 solid stock and turn it to your diameter.

I guess that it depends on what species of wood you are going to use, and how available it is in thicker stock.

Ive done this before using hose clamps placed closely together. Worked great. Must get the diameter of the veneer correct 1st and not use any glue with H2O in it such as yellow glue. It will swell the veneer and change the size. In my experience yellow glue and veneer dont mix. Glue with water always swells the veneer and then it dries and cracks for me. Unibond 800 is the only way to go with veneer.

Dan,

I don't think there is any really easy way to wrap veneer around this size dowel. Doesn't mean it cant be done, just not so easily.

With that said, the most difficult part is getting the return seam to meet, provided you require that.

I would probably soak the veneer, wrap it around the dowel and then wrap newspaper over it to wick away the water/softening solution. Keep changing the newspaper until the veneer is dry. This way the veneer should roughly hold the shape making it much easier to cut through both layers to get a good seam and will make gluing it onto the dowel much easier.

Personally if I had a choice I would turn a dowel out of the chosen wood like Brian said, way easier.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
