Subject : Veneer Fading a Problem?

I'm getting ready to make kitchen cabinets, and I was talking to an interior designer about the project. She said something that I hadn't heard before, and I was wondering if it's something anyone here has experienced.

She told me that if I'm making veneered cabinets with hardwood edges, I should be aware that the veneer will fade a lot more (and/or more quickly) than the hardwood edges, and that the edges will become very noticeable. She said she'd seen this on several projects.

I haven't noticed this on any of the veneer projects I've done. Has anyone else?

he or she is absolutley correct. depending on the location of the cabinets in reference to sunlight . cherry being the prime example if you have a sample of both hardwood and veneer put them in the sun and see which one darkens faster. not knowing what species your using its hard to offer anymore info.

That isn't a veneer issue. That's the same as it would be with hardwood. This designer said that she's seen veneer on the inside of cabinets fade more than hardwood on the edges. It didn't make any sense to me.

Paula,

Im not saying it cant happen in certain situations but its not my general experience. I made my own kitchen cabinets out of solid cherry and cherry veneer over 10 years ago and I see no difference between the solid and veneer. Im actually looking at them while I type this. Even the ones that are in strong light are the same as well.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
