I've done a lot of large arches with my bags and haven't had the problem you describe. But I have had better luck with gluing the bottom veneer on the core at the same time that I glue the core up, rather than trying to apply the veneer to an already glued up core. If there are too many layers to do at once, I get the veneer on the bottom and as many layers glued as possible, do that pressing, and then without taking that off the form, just add the next batch of layers and outer layer of veneer and then back in the bag. Doesn't matter if it's two ply veneer or not. That way, you won't have the problem of trying to press veneer between two already formed pieces (the core & the form).
The other thing is that you need more than one layer of 3/8 rubber ply on your form for 6" centres. Need 3/4" of skin on 6" centres, otherwise need 3" centres on your ribs. I find that 3/8" rubber ply often is 1/4" or so, and two layers of that will still cause problems, i.e. you will be able to tell where the ribs were on your glued up piece on the side that was against the form. If you're using more than 2 layers on your form, Darryl recommends gluing them together before attaching that skin to your ribs (for rigidity), but I haven't had a problem going with 3 layers of 1/4" rubber ply directly onto the form.
