Hi everybody,
I know alot of you are big believers in mdf
as a substrate (as am I), but I have a job that
I want to do dovetail joinery on. So my questions
are: is soft maple a good choice? The panels will
be 16" wide x 26" high. I have stock that wide.
Should I use one pc or do a glue up?If a glue up,
how many pcs should I use in said glue up?
Should I crossband or is 1 pc with the grain better?
Thanks for any help. Wade

Wade,

Its not really critical how many pieces you use for the substrate but I do recommend you glue it up with a urea glue instead of a white or yellow glue. PVA glues can cause the glue line to telegraph somewhat through the veneer.

Don not cross band. Only put down one veneer with the grain going in the same direction as the solid.

Hey Darryl...

Just curious.

I've never tried this, so I'm curious if this would be asking for trouble.

In Wade's example above, his dimensions are 16" x 26" Would if you made an MDF substrate that was 14" X 24", and attached a 1" border of maple all the way around this, then veneered.

This way, you'd have edges all ready for joinery. The veneer used would also be maple, so the glue lines would disappear.

Just thinking out loud, and wondering what the downside would be. I have done dovetail joinery on the sides of a panel with solid substrates, but never as wide as 16". I'm thinking that 16" may be awfully wide, and am curious if my suggestion above is viable.

Thanks.

Brian,

No problem with your idea as long as you put down a sub veneer under the face one to protect any possibility of telegraphing.
