Subject : Cold Press Glue vs. Urea

Hi,

I just veneered some samples with beechwood veneer on mdf using Franklin cold press glue. I left it pressed for almost 2 hours, after taking out of the press I sanded the samples and they looked great. I could not see any visible seams, but after a day or so all seams became very evident (they opened up). So my guess is that the veneer expanded over it's width because of the moisture in the glue during pressing and shrunk during curing of the glue for the next day or so. And I think the elasticity of the glue allowed the veneer to "creep" during curing time. Would that be a correct statement? If that is a common occurence could it be eliminated by using urea resin?

Thanks,
Klaus

Klaus,

First, I want to say that no matter what glue you use its important not to scrape or sand your panel for a full 24hrs. With a PVA glue all the moisture needs to leave, and with urea resin glue full catalization needs to complete.

Although PVA does allow veneer to move a slight amount over time and I do notice the seams sometimes, I think your extreme condition is from sanding too soon. Yes, urea resin glue will eliminate this but if sanded right away after pressing it may have done some of what you got as well.

Sincerely

Darryl,

I also used the handheld stitcher that I bought from you guys. I did not think that sanding too soon would have an affect on venner shrinkage or joints opening up. I also did a sample using veneer tape, but I left it sitting on a drying rack for 48 hours before handling, it did not open up at the joints. So I had 2 variables, one was tape instead of stitch, the other curing time before handling, both used the franklin glue.

Klaus,

I would say that the tape/stitch aspect did not have an effect on the seam issue. If the seams are tight when you take it out of the press then the tape or stitching has done its job and is no longer a factor in joint stability.

Sincerely
