I am bidding on a dining room table to be veneered in ribbon mahogany. The top and base are to be 2" thick. The edges will also be veneered with 1/4' radiused corners. To keep the weight of the table down, I am thinking of using some type of honeycomb product for the substrate. I am looking for sources for the substrate and information on proper veneering techniques for this type of substrate.

Bob,

A couple of suggestions. Do a search on this forum for "honeycomb", I think you will find a lot of information. Also, there is a book from Taunton Press called, I think, "Dinning Tables". It walks you through a project using a honeycomb core. If after looking at this information you need more specific help feel free to post again here or call me at 207-725-0935.

You can get honeycomb from this web site, just go to the accessories page.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Hi, Bob,

About a year ago I was comissioned to build a large coffee table that was all constructed of 2" thick material. The client had some connections in the maritime arena, and I ended up building the table on a foam core that is used in ship building. I skinned the foam core with 1/4" mdf and veneered as usual. It resulted in very lightweight and fully rigid panels. If you are interested in knowing more, e-mail me and I can look up the specifics on the product, and who sells it. It is available in various thicknesses. My address is richardbrewer1@yahoo. I always like to offer help on this forum, because I always get such good advice here.

Hey Richard,
Tried your e-mail but it came back. I'm interested in this thick core material you used. Could you post a supplier name or some info. Either that or e-mail me at timborys@mts.net
thanks,
tim
