I'm looking at teaching a class using veneers and the school is suggesting Titebond cold press veneer glue. I have no experience with this stuff. Has anyone out there used this before and is it a decent glue? I did use regular Titebond once and had plenty of creep over time. I hate it when the seams eventually get ridges so I really don't want to repeat the experience. Any comments on this glue will be appreciated.

Dave,

Because Titebond Cold Press glue is a PVA just like regular Titebond the results you get over time will be the same. Its during lay up and pressing that you'll see a difference. Although I haven't used Titebond's Cold Press glue I understand it sets slower and is thicker than regular Titebond. Obviously a slow setting PVA is beneficial for veneering and its thickness helps to prevent bleed through. As I said before these qualities don't change its long term performance only how it handles during lay up. This of course can be worthwhile in a PVA but its not a substitute for the qualities you get in a urea glue.

I want to make it clear that in no way am I knocking PVA's that are designed to be used with veneer (I'm actually working on developing a PVA for veneering right now), I just want folks to be clear that a PVA marketed for veneering is not some unique and different glue. Its still a PVA which means it bonds and cures in the same way all PVA's do.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

I use a PVA for all my veneer pressing now. I've found that as long as I make sure I let the pressed panel really dry out after pressing everything is fine. I stack all my pressed panels with sticks between for at least 2 weeks before using them and once finished I never have any creep problems.
Yes the PVA does increase the moisture in the veneer and board, and if finished right away I would have problems, but by waiting those few weeks I seem to have eliminated this.
I use a high quality PVA available here in Australia.

Thanks fellas for the input. They say it drys faster so it doesn't need a lot of time in the press and time here is important. Since these are learning pieces I guess it's no big deal if it does creep some. However, I think I will stick to the ureas for my own work. Dave
