You might try your local public library for marquetry books, also any local Woodcraft, Rockler, or similar source of woodworking project books.
My first thought would be to use a straightedge and sharp knife, cutting from the point to the base, to make the points. Keep in mind that two sides of every sheet of veneer have different light reflective (refractive?) properties, so make sure to make the same side of each point the show side.
I've found a CAD program to be a great resource for making cutting templates. For the backgammon points, you could just use a couple sheets of grid paper as an alternative. Cut the points oversize, tape to the template, and then cut them out. I would tape the points in place on the veneer that will be the field of the board, and use the points themselves as templates to cut their openings in the field veneer.
It's a great game, and I used to spend hours with a high school friend (obviously before either of us were married).
