Carving friend down the street asked if vacuum bag could be used with yellow PVA adhesive to glue up blanks for carved newel posts. He's using cherry boards 8" x 1.75" x 60". Normal pipe and bar clamps don't reach the middle and too few heavy duty deep throat clamps. If I used a vacuum bag, my first thought would be to position the boards on edge, so that the glue joints are vertical. If I placed a melamine caul 8" x 60" underneath, the bag could drape down the sides completely and the boards couldn't slip from side to side, only in the long dimension. If I position the boards so that the glue joints are horizontal, the boards could slip in two directions as the bag is evacuated, but the size of the melamine caul would be less critical. Is one orientation better than the other? Thanks.

Don,

Before I answer you tell me how many of these your friend needs to make. Is there more than one?

Sincerely

Sorry. It's usually one or two for any one job.

Don,

OK, with that information this is how I would do it. First, you will get the best results with the boards laying horizontally on top of one another. For eliminating slipping use some stretch wrap, I use the stuff for all sorts of thing. You actually want to keep the bag off the glue joints a much as possible.

Now for the pressing, it would go like this. We'll assume the posts are 8.5" wide. If you are doing two, place them on the platen with a 1" space between them. Cut a piece of 3/4" material that spans both glue ups and overhangs 1" on either side. So the total with of the 3/4" cover sheet would be 8.5 + 8.5 + 1" (for in between) + 2" (1" on each outside) = 20

This cover sheet will not only keep the bag off the glue joint, it will increase the clamping pressure as the overhang pressure will be transferred to the posts.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
