I had a chance to check out vacume pressing at the recent Fort Washington expo. Being new to the idea of pressing I was hoping for some feed back . I have a large libary to build with 32 rasied panels to make . I was going to use a mdf field with a mitered boarder of solid walnut . Most of the panels will be 24x32 the largest is 48x72. Now comes the questions ,size of system, table or bag,do I need to veneer the backs, if so will that have to be walnut also??? I am new at this so please any help would be great !! Thanks Rusty

Randy,

I would suggest a 4x8 bag system. For someone starting out a bag system is more versatile than a frame. A bag can be rolled up and put away when not in use. Most folks get frame systems once they are doing vacuum veneering on a regular basis.

Yes, you should veneer the backs as well to keep the panels from warping. You do not have to put walnut on the back, any veneer will do. Personally, I would use walnut so when you open the door its all the same wood.

Rusty,

You dont have to use the Unibond 800 for paper backed veneer like I recommend for raw veneer but using it would give you a very rigid glue line and lots of open work time. Of course the set times are much longer so you will have to sort out whats important.

I dont think it really matters in your situation if you go with 10 or 20mil. Personally I always like thicker so I'd pick the 20mil. If you cant get I wouldnt sweat it.

Sincerely
