Subject : How far can I bend 3/8" bending ply

Can anybody tell me how tight (i.e. minimum radius) I can bend 3/8” bending plywood? I’ve successfully made an 18” radius curved panel using a core comprised of two layers of 3/8” plywood. However, I need to make other panels that have a tighter radii. I’m not sure how small of a radius I can achieve with two layers of 3/8” ply as the core without breaking the ply or experiencing significant spring back. I’d appreciate any information that you’d care to share.

Jon

Jon,

My experience is about a 6" radius. I find the bendability of bending ply varies from batch to batch sometimes, could depend on the source as well. I also put a backer grade veneer between the two bending plys as well to help hold the radius better and make it more stable.

When I get much under a 10" I tend to switch to 1/8" bending poplar, easier to bend and holds the radius better.

Sincerely

That's what I thought. Thanks for the information.

I know this is an older post, but I figured I'd add to it...

I made an entertainment center/TV stand a few months back, and used a 3/8" ply that resembled a yellow luan - It was not a bendable ply, but I kerfed it every 1/2 inch, and sucessfully wrapped it around a 3" radius..

I actually did 2 plys of this, for a total of 3/4". 1st py had the kerfs facing out - the second ply had the kerfs facing in. I then wrapped the collumns with a 2ply. I was very please with the results - This is just an amature photo http://www.gregorypaolini.com/casework/CurveAVCab/CurveAVCab.htm
