I want to use my vacuum press to laminate two pieces of 3/4" MDF. It doesn't seem like I'd need cauls for this project (is this true?), but I'm worried about protecting the vinyl bag from the sharp edges on the MDF. Any suggestions for what I should do?

The same question comes up from a previous discussion on this forum. The point was made that you can put the veneer side you're gluing on the bottom side in the bag, in which case you don't need a top caul. If you do that, what do you need to do to make sure you don't puncture the bag?

No, you don't really need cauls in this application.

As far as sharp edges go, I will sometimes fold a piece of evacunet twice (so it's quadruple thick), and place this over the sharp corners.

Really, anything that you can create to place over the sharp corners will work, including a caul, if you want.

I've also created some corner blocks out of mdf that have rounded corners. Some double stick tape holds them in place.

I just put cardboard strips over the edges and corners of the substrate. No holes in my bag.
