Subject : venner and lacquer cracking

hello all,
i am a furniture finisher in new york.one of my customres just built an oak wall unit and needed it finished.
after the job was installed, all the veneer started to crack. i use nitrocelluose lacquer and he used contact cement to adhere the oak veneer.
only the veneer parts are cracking.
anyone know why this would happen??a reply to pooteo@aol.com would be appreciated

Unfortunately this is commonly what happens with contact cement. This glue is not sufficiently rigid enough to stop the veneer from moving, at least not enough to prevent surface cracking. The laquer probably exacerbated the problem as well since the volatiles penetrate the veneer and weaken the glue bond.

Veneer really needs a much harder glue line than contact cement provides to prevent these problems unless the veneer is bonded to a laminate backer or is a two ply.

I experimented with contact cement once. After applying the veneer I used wipo-on, water based poly and it did the same thing... severe cracking and curling.

I would never ever use contact cement on any veneer even the NBL(Wood on wood)except if it is phenolic backed.

Movement of glue line particularly in heat and air conditioning can cause crazing and sometimes on thin veneer sprayed wet coats of lacquer can hit glue line.

Find a way no matter what the shape.
