Unfortunately this is commonly what happens with contact cement. This glue is not sufficiently rigid enough to stop the veneer from moving, at least not enough to prevent surface cracking. The laquer probably exacerbated the problem as well since the volatiles penetrate the veneer and weaken the glue bond.
Veneer really needs a much harder glue line than contact cement provides to prevent these problems unless the veneer is bonded to a laminate backer or is a two ply.
