Subject : veneering laminated MDF core

In a recent project I laminated 1" MDF into some heavy pedestals and I veneered them. The pedestals were primarily rectilinear. I am now contemplating a similar project that would include more curved work in the pedestals. I intend to build up 4 or 5 inches of solid MDF and then shape it into some forms, which will then be veneered. It is important that I use thick "blocks" of MDF, as it need weight for stability.
Anyone have any similar experience? My concern is in applying veneer to the "cut" surfaces of the MDF. Will adhesives work in their normal fashion? Is there a risk of the glue lines in the laminations telegraphing through the veneer? Are there other risks I have not considered? Any advice would be helpful. Thank you!

Richard,

The main thing I would do on this project is to put a backer veneer between your stack laminated MDF and your face veneer. This will protect the face veneer from any potential problems at the MDF glue joints. Because you are glueing to MDF end grain so to speak, which will be extra absorbant, I would do a double roll with the glue. Roll a coat, let it sit for a few minutes, then roll another coat.

Thanks, Darryl,

Are you saying that you would reccommend veneering the outside surface of the form, first with backer grade and then with face grade veneer? Or, are you saying to veneer between the laminations of the mdf? Thanks so much for your advice.

By the way, just wanted to let you know that I am constantly telling people about your website here, and reccommending it to them. I am a part time employee at our local Woodcraft franchise, and I am always steering customers to you for their veneering needs. Thanks again, Richard.

Richard,

Im saying veneer a backer to the outside of the MDF laminated form. No need to do it in between the MDF pieces.

Thanks for sharing about this forum with others. The more people that come here the more information gets shared.

Sincerely
