Can Melamine covered “MDF” be used for the platen instead of medium density MDF? The “MDF” in the Melamine covered sheets has a much coarser structure than medium weight MDF and I was wondering if there would be a problem of out gassing from it. I asked this question as the instructions that came with my pump stated that plywood should not be used for the platen?

Also if using the Melamine covered MDF is it necessary to groove both sides to prevent warping?

Thanks

Howard

i use melamine for platens - it's great cause the glue doesn't stick (don't need wax paper).
grooves are just on 1 side - the outside

What is the thickness needed for the platens?

Tom,

3/4" is what I recommend for platens. You can go thicker but I dont suggest going thinner.
