Subject : Dyeing Veneers before glueing

I have reason to dye/stain some veneer before cutting or gluing the work down.

I would suspect that any of the water or alcohol based dyes would work but I am looking for anyone with experience doing this.

Spider Johnson who has used a lot of dyed veneers in his marquetry work told me he uses Rit dye for clothing. Most grocery stores have it. To get the dye to go all the way through he uses a pressure cooker.

Good success with Rit powdered dyes, except green only fair but yellow is just awful. I used maple and pear and the results look similar.

Does any one have any suggestions on achieving a true yellow ?

Bye the way, I used teflon pans and they wont clean up. Line with aluminum foil or you will have dedicated dying pans. Stainless tools won't stain.

Rit actually has their product listed as a brush on wood dye,
