I am currently wrapping a very tight radius (0.125) with veneer. The veneer that I am using has to be soaked in conditioner in order to form to the radius. After soaking I bend it around the form and use 6x30" strips of 4 ml plastic, stretched and wrapped around the form, to hold it in place. I did all this last night, and when I came in this morning there was some mold starting to grow on the veneer. The mold is forming not under the plastic but in the spaces between plastic strips. The veneer physically under the plastic is still wet.

My question is...is this the right way to wrap such a tight radius?
How do I get rid of the mold before applying finish? I was planning on using just lacquer...no stain, so bleaching is out of the question

Eric,

Well, I assume you do not have a vacuum press since you are applying pressure by stretching plastic. If you could get your hands on one the whole process would go much easier with very little wetting.

Aside from that there are two things you could do. One is to bend your wet veneer and then let it dry in place without any glue. You can do this by placing newspaper in between the veneer and plastic wrap. Keep changing the paper until its dry enough to basically stay in place with minimal support. Then with the plastic wrap off drying can be finished off without newspaper. Once the veneer is dry you can then glue it and repeat the wrapping process without wetting it.

The second method is a version of this except you are gluing at the same time and you dont remove the plastic wrap until the glue sets. I am not in favor of this method because the veneer should really be relatively dry before gluing and the newspaper is only going to draw out a percentage of the moisture. You run the risk of the veneer checking and the bond being compromised.

I do have a vacuum press but am not sure how it would help in the bending around the tight radius. I have your advanced video and seen what you have done; great stuff, but you should wear your safety glasses more! The problem is when I try and bend the veneer it cracks directly at the tight radius I am trying to form.

Thanks for all your help...

Eric,

There is some information missing here for me to get a clear picture. Besides the small radius, whats the overall shape of this piece? What kind of veneer are you using? Are you wrapping the easy way or the hard way with the veneer?

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
