I'm really new to veneering - just about to take the plunge - and have read through a lot of this forum. I have a couple of questions re my first project.

I want to match the raised panel inserts for some kitchen cabinets. The raised edge is on the front only (about a 1 5/8" x 1/2" cove) and the panels are about 16"x32". I'll make the stiles and rails out of oak stock and the panel out of MDF with veneers on the front and back. I plan to shape the raised MDF panel and apply the veneer to both sides afterwards.

1) Is this the way to proceed? If so, how thin does the veneer have to be? I can get 1/16" with a paper backing locally.

2) Can get by with yellow glue?

If you are doing this as your first veneering project, frankly, I'd advise you to not try raised panels. It sounds to me that you want to raise a panel out of MDF, and then veneer the panel, including the raised center, as well as the curved transition at the coved edges of the panel....

This is pretty tricky for a beginner. I would advise instead, to not raise panels....just use flat mdf or plywood as the center panel, or think of some other design idea.

Someone else here might have a suggestion as to how to do it easily, but I can't offer one...

As far as adhesives, most people here will tell you to go with Unibond 800 rather than yellow PVA in most cases. You have a longer working time, and a better bond.

my 2cents...good luck...

The thing is ... the doors I'm trying to match are red oak and they are veneer over raised panels (made from plywood). I just want to match them up and have it look good.

What you wrote is correct. I want to raise the MDF and apply the veneer to it. The curved transitions do concern me and that's what I wrote about. I removed one of the existing raised panels and discovered the veneer used on the raised portion is 1/16".

Jharris,

I agree with Brian that trying to veneer over the raised portion of a panel is not a beginner’s task. Not to mention it can’t be done with 1/16" veneer.

I don’t mean to be discouraging but I would consider some other option.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
