Darryl:
I am using 19 mm Baltic Birch as a sub strate and veneering it with 1/32 thick Birdseye maple, using Unibond 800. The veneer is raw wood, not paper backed.
After the panel is completed (dry) I would like to bleach the Birdseye. Should I expect any problems such as delamination, etc.?
Thank you.

why not bleach the veneer before pressing?

you'll see whatever complications may occur with color before committing to a pressed piece, and you'll be more likely to get the bleaching thorough and even, since it would be easier to saturate veneer completely.

also, I have no idea whether or not bleach will effect unibond (I wouldn't think so....), but if there IS any effect, you could allow the bleach to cure on the veneer for a while before adding the adhesive, and pressing.

my 2 cents....take it for what it's worth....Darryl? thoughts?

Ron,

Bleaching birdseye maple after it is pressed with Unibond 800 will not be a problem.

You could bleach the individual veneer pieces before pressing it as Brian suggested which would work fine. I would be inclined to do it after pressing to avoid the hassle of flattening and removing all the moisture you will put into the veneer with the bleaching process.

Sincerely

Darryl,
Thank you for your comments. No, I would not want to bleach veneer by itself due to the moisture curling problem, therefore I would only add the moisture after it is stablized on a substrate. The only problem I could see in using Baltic Birch as a substrate is, any moisture from the bleach and the neutralizer could cause the open edges to swell, but that is preventable in several ways.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Regards,
Ron
