I would like to find some info on veneering some stock pine molding that I have w/some mahogany veneer (unfaced) along its length. Ive tried a couple short pieces, wet w/ h20 and dry but my samples split in length (veneer, not molding.)

James,

What is the profile of your molding?

Sincerely

Darryl,
Thanks for getting right back to me!!!!
To answer the profile Q its basically a standard Brosco W/ a 1/2 inch cove @ the bottom w/ a fillet and a cyma-recta. its 2 3/4 wide w/ a spring angle @40 degrees. I dont think it should be any more difficult than the one shown in the brochure for the "working in a vacuum" video.
I purchased the system from you this spring and I honestly can tell you that there arent a lot of products out there where you get more than you pay for, but Vacuum Pressing Systems has opened an endless array of possibilities for my woodworking endeavors.

James,

The molding you are attempting is somewhat difficult and may take a bit of practice. The key is that, apart from the outside right angles at both sides of the molding you have to have the veneer down against the molding. The splitting usually comes from the veneer locking on the high points and then not having enough extra to be drawn down into the low areas when the bag applies pressure. I usually have a board that I hold the veneer down with on top of the bag with until the vacuum takes over.

I make a strong effort not to sell anything on this forum but you may find getting the Working in a Vacuum video will help show you visually exactly how this is done. You can also just play around some more until it makes sense.

Glad to hear you are happy with your vacuum system.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
