Subject : Veneer problems for newbie

I am fairly new to vennering and have been reading lots of books and articles- One method described in "Veneering, a foundation course" by Mike Burton he describes using an iron to reheat dried glue-
Here is my problem- I applied two coats of white ww glue to a 22" x 30" birch plywood substrate and two coats to the maple veneer then let them dry for 3 hours. I applied the veneer to the plywood and using an iron on med setting I attatched the veneer. All went great till 2 hours later I noticed a 6 inch long split, I filled it with wood filler and left it overnight. The next day I sprayed the panel with black latex paint. About an hour after the paint dried I noticed two more splits and a 4 inch area at one edge lost adhesion.
Can somebody tell me what might have gone wrong???

Thanks
Dave

I recently tried the iron on method, for the first AND ABSOLUTELY THE LAST time. Seams opened, splits formed, must have had 75 bubbles show up over the following week ... I was using a FWW article I think by Mario Rodriguez, and although he had some success I obviously did not.

If ironing is mandatory, some suggestions would be:
make sure the veneer is dry dry dry drier than the driest martini;
reinforce any seams with a strip of 3 hole veneer tape on the glue side;
after applying the glue, let the veneer dry for at least 5 hours, longer if possible, so that moisture from the glue may have time to leave the veneer;
don't use any higher iron heat setting than necessary, and get the iron off the veneer as soon as possible;
if religous, go to church every day for a week before ironing;
if not religous, consider it.

I agree for regular wood veneer. However, I have had good sucess with the iron-on method using paper backed veneer and for edge treatment where the veneer is narrow. But I've always done best using clamps or vacuum bag (which is really just a big clamp).

3 hours is not long enough drying time, although I've done it quicker than that. Start in the middle, never at the ends, and as mentioned, use the lowest heat possible. You might also want to try praying.
