michael,
gator ply is a substrate backer and not used for backing veneer. try yorkite for the backing instead of gator ply. yorkite is made expressly for veneer backing and to balance backs of large panels.
as for kerfcore, i assume you mean kerfed mdf which is bendable?
i would make the two column halves in my vacuum press then apply the veneer onto the two column halves and assemble the two halves on site . as for using contact cement i wouldn't reccomend that at all, but if it's your only option , you gotta do what you gotta do.
if you apply the veneer to the kerf core flat and try to bend the lay up around the column odd's are you'll split the veneer, or it may not even bend at all because the glue has made the bendable mdf somewhat rigid.
again, i would make one form . the inside diameter being the outside diameter of the column in question. once there out of the press keep the the column half on the form, lay on your veneer on the column half and back into the bag. don't forget the cover sheet on top of the veneer. i use 30lb kraft. don't use alot of glue or you'll have a paper column instead of a veneered column. better yet , use 30lb butchers paper, it's waxed on one side.
best regards,
craig
