Subject : What do you use to spread your adhesive?

I've been using foam rollers for a long time now.

I've noticed that some foam rollers deteriorate quicker than others (like a doofus, I don't make note of which ones not to buy, or just simply forget which ones deteriorate more when I go out to buy more).

My point is that some foam rollers slightly deteriorate enough to leave little tiny pieces of foam on the panel in with the adhesive.

Now, truly, I don't think that a couple little bits of foam will make any difference in how a project turns out...after all, it's foam....it compresses, and holds adhesive....it'll just flatten. And if a large piece of foam gets in the piece, I'll just pick it out.

BUT...if I can find a roller that doesn't leave any little bits at all, I'd be happier.

Or, does anyone here use a rubber roller? I think that I would like to stay away from that...it might be tougher to get a uniform thickness. (?)

Thanks,

bg

Whenever I have to spread any kind of glue on a large surface I use an Adhesive Roller from "the depot". It looks sort of like the hooked part of velcro and works extremely well. I buy the ones that fit a 9" roller and for smaller pieces I will cut it on the bandsaw and use it on a 3" roller frame. With any waterbase glue I can wash it out and re-use it a bunch. Steve

I've been using 1/16" x 1/16" square notched trowels for the last few years and have found that it leaves exactly the right amount of glue in most cases. It doesn't leave any foreign objects and lasts for many years. It's also faster than any roller.

I'll second on the trowel, almost the same as derwood. I use a fine notch trowel, it allows for a fast spread. My formula for mixing up is 300sq. in. per fluid oz. This usually almost always leaves some to cleanup. Some of the coarse woods, Luan meranti etc. will take almost all and smoother woods, birch, maple etc. will take less.
