Subject : Veneering a circular coffee table

I want to make a veneered circular Art Deco looking coffee table top that will have a 10" thick circular slab top. I have two questions: 1- veneering the top surface is OK in the vacuum bag as this is a flat surface which I plan to veneer last. But how the hell should I veneer the sides around the circle. If I have a bag large enough, can this be done in a vacuum bag? The table will be 50" diam. How exactly do you do this? and how do you stop the veneer breaking over the edge onto the top and bottom?

My 2nd question is how to make the structure to veneer. I was going to make a torsion box wraped in 3/8 bending ply, but I am worried in time the bending ply will show through the veneered top surface.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Anton,

My suggestion for your table construction is to rabbet the bending ply into the edge of the table top so there wont be any joint on the top surface. As far as veneering the 10” edge I would make up a two-ply, which is your face veneer glued to a backer veneer running 90 degrees. This two ply veneer is stable enough to just clamp up outside the bag with a couple of layers of bending ply on top as a caul and two or three band clamps for pressure. The two-ply will also prevent any telegraphing of the rabbet joint as well. Doing the edge pressing in the bag would be too difficult and making up a two-ply is the solution in my opinion. If you don’t have band clamps you can also glue blocks on both ends of the second layer of bending ply, back slightly from the actual ends, and clamp the blocks together which will apply pressure to the entire 10” table edge.

Sincerely

Thanks Daryl,

I like the idea of rebating the bending ply into the sides.
I assume it would be easier to press the veneer to the sides in several stages. I'll try the band clamps and see how they go.

One more question - do you think it is OK to only veneer one face (the outside) of the top? since I will veneer this last, this is really the only way. I don't want the top to go even slightly concave in time.

Regards,

Anton,

Because you are building a 10" torsion box,(assuming its well braced) warpage from veneering just the top will not be a problem.
