I have been using your press for a few months now with generally excellent results.

The only problem I have had is with bird's eye maple. While other veneers I have used are perfectly flat, I get "ripples" from time to time with bird's eye. They are about 1/32" deep, 1/8" wide and range from 1 - 3" in length.

I am using Titebond Cold Press glue. I work as fast as possible from the time I place the veneer.

Would using less glue help? Or would you recommend against using this glue. (I really like the fact that I don't have to mix it and I can take it out of the press in about 2 hours - perhaps sooner.)

Jim,

Of all the veneers out there birdseye maple is the worst for wrinkling. Maple is generally bad and birdseye makes the problem worse because it is usually rotary cut which is even more expansive when gluing.

If your going to stick with a PVA glue use less glue which will help the swelling problem. I wont go as far as saying you shouldnt use this kind of glue but you really have to get the amount just right and go very fast once the birdseye comes in contact with the glue. Two hours of press time should be fine.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

I just finished pressing a BEM panel for a raised panel door. I got a very flat "finish". But I have always used the Unibond 800. It really is easy to work with and with a heating blanket over it can be removed pretty quickly from the Vacupress. I can see that PVA might give BEM a hard time. Just my 2 cents.

I used to get depressions/wrinkles in my veneer panels when using a cold press glue. It was very frustrating and despite diddling with the amount of glue used, reducing my glue up time, time spent in the press, etc. I never figured out how to completly avoid it. Since I swithed to unibond 800 I haven't had this problem.
