Subject : MDF and honeycombs

Hi Darryl-
I recently bought some 3/4" honeycombs for a tabletop, and I noticed that the MDF I was going to use for the frame around it is about 10 thousandths thicker than the honeycomb. Is this going to be a problem? Also, since MDF is pretty absorbant, should I somehow size it, either with Unibond or something else, before pressing it?

Thanks.

Mickey,

Honeycomb does have a small amount of compression so having the MDF thicker would be a problem. Your frame pieces should be slightly less than the honeycomb not more. I would not worry about sizing the MDF. Its the edge surface that is overly absorbant, not the face. Just be a little generous with your glue application.

Thanks for the advice Darryl. I guess I'll just plane the MDF down a little bit. For future reference, is there something better than MDF that you'd suggest for framing honeycombs with?

Thank you also for this great forum - your (and others) advice and insight is invaluable!

Mickey,

I usually use some solid wood like poplar over MDF. MDF is structurally a bit weak compared to solid and I prefer planing solid, easier on my planer knives.

Im glad the forum is useful to you.
