I've read to glue veneer to hard board, however the hard board I get from HD is smooth on one side and very rough on the other. Will the veneer and glue hold well to this rough side? I'm using a weight press right now.
Thanks
Steve

Champisme,

In general, I dont recommend veneering to hardboard, or what I call Masonite. There are two types of hardboard, tempered, and untempered. Tempered doesn't work well, because the oils in it prevent good glue adhesion. Untempered (the type your considering) doesn't really work very well because the fibers are not bonded well enough to each other. After you press the veneer you can grab it and pull the fibers of the hardboard right up with the veneer. Whether you press to the smooth side or the rough side you'll still have this problem. In fact, I think it'll be worse on the rough side.

Sincerely

Steve,

You could veneer on to 1/4" plywood that would be fine. Birch would be a good choice. You can also use 1/4" MDF or particleboard if you can get it. Probably the plywood is going to be the easiest choice to find. Make sure you run the veneer perpendicular to the grain direction of the plywood.

Sincerely.
