In general, I dont recommend veneering to hardboard, or what I call Masonite. There are two types of hardboard, tempered, and untempered. Tempered doesn't work well, because the oils in it prevent good glue adhesion. Untempered (the type your considering) doesn't really work very well because the fibers are not bonded well enough to each other. After you press the veneer you can grab it and pull the fibers of the hardboard right up with the veneer. Whether you press to the smooth side or the rough side you'll still have this problem. In fact, I think it'll be worse on the rough side.
