Why can't I use my shop air compressor to suck a vacuum? It is a piston/oil bath type and will pull an honest26".

I discovered that after a few minutes the compressor started spitting oil out the discharge side. I guess the vacuumwas pulling oil past the rings. It pulled half of the oil out of the crankcase in a few cycles, so I stopped and went to a backup system. I removed the head to check the valves but fortunately there was no damage. Now I'm wondering, just out of curiosity, if one of those oilless 12v emergency compressors would work (if there's a way to connect to the intake side)

Dear Howard,26"HG is enough vacuum to press with. I cannot say if there is any negative factors in usingyour compressor in this way. One thing you will not be able to do is have your compressorsense vacuum and automatically shut off. And I dont think you will want to have it run continuously for the entire time you have something in the bag.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Why can't I use my shop air compressor to suck a vacuum? Thanks Darryl. I would have thought this idea would have occurred to others by now. I am concerned that the piston rings are not set up for this duty, although it is an ex-refrigeration compressor.(rather large - pumps a measured 9 cfm @ 80 lbs). I can wire the vacuum switch to the motor starter for auto operation.
