To anyone,In my report that I am writing I am asked to list the advantages and disadvantages of using two materials, PVA glue and MDF wood. What are the advantages of using MDF to veneer onto and the disadvantages? Also, what are the advantages of using PVA glue to stick the veneers onto the MDF while they are in the vacuum pressing machine? Any replies will be gratefully accepted,Thomas.

Thomas, What a great question. You have hit on one of the great debates. PVA glue in a cold press or vacuum bag is worthless. PVA introduces a lot of moisture into the veneer and therefore the veneer expands. The big problem is in your seams. When you remove your panel from the bag all the seams look great. Give it a day all the joints will all be open. PVA does not form a RIGID glue line. Veneers will "cold creep". Burls and crotches will creep the most. The only acceptable glue for vacuum pressing is Unibond 800. As for MDF- Its the best substrate to veneer to. Its stable and easy to calibrate. The only disadvantages to MDF is the weight.
