: Dear Dave,: Honeycomb will not end up being much stronger than the solid would. Much better than plywood but not solid. You are really asking a lot considering your chosen thickness and shelf length. I recommend making the shelves shorter or thicker. Neither probably fits your design but that is what I recommend.: : I need to make a few shelves to store books on and am concerned about : : shelf sag. The shelves must be 46" long by 10.5" wide. Thickness : : should be about 7/8" to 1" thick. The shelves are to be Sapele. : : Would it be better to use 3/4" honeycomb and veneer the outside with : : 1/8" Sapele or will the solid wood be adequate? I think the load : : will be around 90 lbs.For a length you are mentioning, I would recommend 5/4" thickness as a minimum. If you really insist on such a thin shelf, perhaps you could work in an iron angle hidden behind the edge strip. Solid wood is far stronger than plywood for such an application, but it WILL sag. Period. Do I "uh" sound like I've lived throught this before?
