Dear Nick,There is really nothing wrong with PVA glue at all. It was the details of your specific project that made me recommend a urea glue. PVA glue's dry and cure by the removal of water from the glue joint. Urea glue's are catalytic, they dry very hard and rigid which makes them an ideal veneering glue since the whole point of veneer is being able to overcome the seasonal expansion and contraction of wood. The most rigid glue will give the best results. Its not the PVA wont hold, because it will. Its that some of the small things that might show up over time with PVA most likely wont with urea glue. It really depends on the project which glue I use.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Hi Darryl: Thanks for the info. thats really useful, just one question - what exactly is wrong with PVA glue?: Nick: : Dear Nick,: : The only way you can get birdseye the size you want in one piece is to purchase paper backed veneer which would come in a 4x8 sheet. If you want to use only raw veneer then you will have to tape it up yourself. You can use a veneer knife of saw designed for the purpose or you can sandwich your veneer between two boards and rout the veneer using a flush trim bit against the edge of the board where the veneer sticks out. : : For glue, be sure to use urea resin which comes in powder form or as a liquid you mix with a powder. We offer the liquid type which you can check out in the main part of this web site. Do not use white or yellow glue on your project. Birdseye is a difficult enough veneer to press sucessfully, especially the size you are attempting, without trying to use a PVA glue.: : As far as pressing, your piece is much to big to attempt with clamps. You just wont get uniform enough pressure that way. You need some kind of a press. Obviously a vacuum press would be the least expensive way to go unless you know someone who would lay it up for you or will let you borrow theirs.: : : : Sincerely: : Darryl Keil: : : I am soon starting a veneering project, which is new to me. I want to : : : veneer a dining room table, which includes some marquetry work around : : : the edges, and a centre section of around 6' x 4' on MDF. The : : : marquetry is no problem, however the large centre section is to be : : : birds eye maple. My questions are:: : : Is Birds eye maple available in one sheet of this size, or do I have : : : to join it (my current supplier only stocks veneers in 3' x 1' pieces): : : If jointing is required, what is the best way?: : : What is the best glue for this?: : : Is it possible to glue veneers of this size using clamps?: : : Any advice would be welcome, as I want to avoid expensive mistakes!: : : Many thanks: : : Nick
