I'm veneering 1/32" quilted maple to a one piece mahogany guitar body and I'm using a vacuum press for this process. Since the guitar body is slightly curved and recessed in areas, my questions are;1) Will mahogany expand/contract thus requiring special glue to account for it shifting or will a Unibond-800 suffice?2) Can water/glyercin mix be used as a wood softener to help the veneer accommodate the curves and recesses or is a GF-20 type product better?3) Since the recesses are somewhat sharp and deep is it safe to allow the bag to rest on top of the veneer without using a caul? Thanks

My .02 worth...GF-20 is not specifically for flattening veneer but for plasticizing the cells. Flattening is what it is best known for. The chemicals get into the cell and makes the wood fiber "elastic" for a period of time.Primary reason is so that when it is pressed to it's finalform / shape, the memory of the veneer is eliminated. Post press it does not want to flex to return to it's original shape. The tension inherent in untreated veneer is .goneThis can be flat, round or twisted - regardless or profile shapeJohn Ersingwww.veneersystems.com

Dear Sam,The Unibond 800 will be fine for your project. The glue will not cause problems with the small amount of expansion and contraction you will get.The water/glycerin mix is not appropriate for your situation as its purpose is for flatening veneer and all the moisture needs to be removed before pressing. The GF20 will make the veneer more flexible even when it has all been wicked away, but I am not sure you will need it. Sometimes a light wetting with a sponge just on the outside surface of the veneer after the glue has been spread can help, not too much water though. To get a good pressing I think you will have to go direct against the bag. I'm assuming the curves you need to press are compound and no caul that has any rigidity will conform to compound curves.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I'm veneering 1/32" quilted maple to a one piece mahogany guitar body : and I'm using a vacuum press for this process.
