Hi, I do cabinets for a living and not much, a little, but over all not much experience with veneer. I am currently looking at a job that has a large counter desk that has a 7' 6" radius on one side. The blue prints are calling for 3/8" thick x 8" wide x 48" long oak veneered pieces to go all around the outside of the counter/desk. There is a total of 72' all around the outside of this desk. The 8" wide pieces are to be 4 high. What my problem is what is a good substrate for the veneer and they want the substrate to be wrapped around the edges with the veneer. How is the best way to do this. My 2d thinking is that the veneer will have to be notched to wrap over the side edges. Is this right?? If it can be done how do I do it. I'm wanting to make my own vacuum press for this project. I already have a pump I use for router work for repetitive patterns. It's a 1/10th hp Gast and I run it through a 5 gal tank then out to what ever I need to hold down. A little help on this would be appreciated. Thanks, Eric Morehouse ELM Woodworks

Dear Eric,I would use either 3 layers of 1/8" bending ply or 1/8" MDF to get your 3/8" curved panel. Both of these surfaces are good for veneering.Im not clear if you need to roll the veneer over two opposing edges or all four at the same time, so I cant really respond to this question.Although a 1/10hp gast pump will work, you may find it a little small for doing curved panels where there can be a bit of air to evacuate.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Hi,: I do cabinets for a living and not much, a little, but over all not much experience with veneer. Darryl, It will have to be veneered on the face and all 4 edges. The thickness of the edges are 3/8". The radius of the whole curve is 7' 6". Is this possible?ThanksEric Morehouse: Dear Eric,: I would use either 3 layers of 1/8" bending ply or 1/8" MDF to get your 3/8" curved panel. Dear Eric,Yes, you can do this and it wont really be very difficult. You will need to veneer the four edges seperately. Although I am not a fan of the iron on veneering technique with yellow glue, for putting on your edges is may be the easiest way and Im assuming the edges wont get a lot of abuse.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Darryl,: It will have to be veneered on the face and all 4 edges.
