I need to construct a bookshelf about 8 ft long by about 16 in wide. I plan to use honeycomb with 6mm vc plywood skins. I would like to keep the total thickness to 1 1/2 inches or less. The shelf will be supported at both ends and along 1 edge. Is this doable within these constraints or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Bill,I think a loaded bookshelf with your constraints will sag down along the front edge. Even just one support in the middle would probably do it.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I need to construct a bookshelf about 8 ft long by about 16 in wide. I plan to use honeycomb with 6mm vc plywood skins. Darryl, I'd really like to keep the space underneath free if possible. Do you think 2 inches in thickness would do it? Or, how about incorporating a full length of 1 inch square steel tubing along the front edge inside the box? Thanks again,Bill: Bill,: I think a loaded bookshelf with your constraints will sag down along the front edge. Bill,If you do this construction I think you would be ok. Do a double layer of honeycomb. It looks like this, two layers of 3/4" honeycomb with 1/8" ply between them and 1/4" skins on both sides. This should be as good as you can get.SincerelyDarryl Keil: Darryl, : I'd really like to keep the space underneath free if possible. Do you think 2 inches in thickness would do it?
