I just completed making a 53x50 inch vinyl bag. I sealed one end with HH-66, and made a bag clip for the other. I discovered that 1/2" schedule 40 pvc cut such that 75% of the pipe remains, and a 5/8" diameter dowel rod work well. I use a set of channel locks to press the bag and rod into the pvc. It's cheap and easy, taking 10 minutes to make, and costing less than 5 dollars. If you do this be sure to smooth of the inside edges of the pvc so you don't tear your bag. So far i've veneered a few pieces of mdf with some success. I have two problems though. When veneering a large desktop I have problems getting the item easily into the bag. This prompts me to ask how to make a table top veneer press? Mainly how do you get the sheet of vinyl to seal around the table top? Also are you capable of making very tall pieces in a table top? I would think that the vinyl would wrinkle up more as the height of the piece increased. My second problem is that I get wrinkles in my veneer when bagging. Most come out with rolling through the bag, but on occasion I get a severe wrinkle that simply tears when rolled. How can I avoid this problem? I'm using makore pommele veneer, and dap weldwood on mdf.ThanksRoss

Ross,Having a frame type press with a membrane that will accomodate some height is difficult to make because you cannot do it with just a flat sheet, you need to fabricate it with pleated corners. Kind of like a shoe box lid with a flange. For any kind of real use it also needs to be made from polyurethane because vinyl does not hold up well at any seams. As far as your veneering problems, it sounds like you are not using a caul between you veneer and the bag. Using a sheet of 1/4" masonite as a caul should solve your wrinkling.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I just completed making a 53x50 inch vinyl bag. Ross,On our frame presses the rubber gasket is attached directly to the membrane. This way there is just the table to gasket to membrane, no extra joints to leak through. I dont know of anyone with frame table plans, maybe someone else will post to your message.SincerelyDarryl Keil: : Having a frame type press with a membrane that will accomodate : some height is difficult to make because you cannot do it with just : a flat sheet, you need to fabricate it with pleated corners.
