What is it with maple veneer and PVA glue? I frequently get blisters, areas where the veneer does not adhere to the substrate, using this material. It does not happen with other types of veneer, only the maple. I have tried more glue, less glue, scuffing the substrate (usually MDF), more time in the bag: same result. Is there something inherent with maple that causes this problem? (sugar, as in maple sugar??) What can I do to eliminate this annoyance, perhaps different glue? Parenthetically, I have found that I can iron the blisters with some limited success.

Fred,

Yes, this is a common problem with maple. Maple swells excessively when it comes in contact with PVA glue, more so than any other veneer I have worked with. Of the maples, birdeye is usually the worst because it is rotary cut. Two things you can do. First work very fast getting the panel in the press and under pressure once the veneer has come in contact with the glue. Second, switch to a glue like urea resin that has no tack. This way the veneer may swell but it doesnt get locked down in any areas which is a big part of the problem. Once the veneer gets "locked" in spots the surrounding veneer cant level itself out as the pressure is drawn down.

A few months ago I submitted a post indicating that I was having trouble with blistering when using figured maple veneer. In your reply, one suggestion was working faster as a possible solution. Although I could not work any faster, I reasoned that perhaps the opposite of working faster would be to use some glue with a longer open time. About that time I became aware of Titebond "Extend" PVA glue and tried it. I have glued up about 12 panels by now and so far have not had any problem with the blistering. Am I just lucky, or could this be a solution to what seems to be a common problem?

Fred,

12 successful panels would have to be more than luck. The "extend" PVA would prevent the glue from tacking up too quickly which helps stop the veneer from getting "locked" before the press can level things out. Urea resin glue would do it even better, but it sounds like youve found a solution.

Sincerely
