Subject : Veneer Removal???

I wish to restore my bedroom furniture from childhood. I don't know much about rehabing furniture but I'd like to try it. I'm not sure what kind of finish I have. The wood is heavy but the finish is synthetic. I'm assuming it's veneer. It looks like it's going to be tricky to remove. It doesn't look like it's going to peel off easily. the top of my dresser is pretty damaged and parts of the finish has come off. Is it possible that I could have another finish other than veneer? The furniture was purchased in the late 70s. What can I do to remove it?

Sonya,I could give you all sorts of speculative thoughts about your piece but some simple advice would be to strip the finish for starters. You should have a better idea what condition the veneer is in after that. If its not real veneer, you'll find that out when you go to strip it.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I wish to restore my bedroom furniture from childhood. Darryl or anyone who wants to address this question,Thanks for the feedback. I tried stripping the surface of my dresser. I scraped about 1/8" or perhaps 1/4" inch deep. I could not hit a solid wood surface. There's something like cardboard underneath the finish. Does this sound familiar to you? If this sounds like a familiar finish to you, is it possible to do something to this dresser to make the surface loook better? : Sonya,: I could give you all sorts of speculative thoughts about your piece but some simple advice would be to strip the finish for starters.
