I'm building a table using shop-sawn veneer, with Unibond 800 as the veneer glue. I'm planning to lay up the top up over 3/4 in. MDF, based on MDF's flatness and availability. I've seen advice to scuff sand the MDF surface for best adhesion. Is this in fact necessary, or at least beneficial? An experiment with a small piece of veneer and MDF produced a tenacious bond even without sanding. But I'm a newbie to this and don't want to make a mistake.

Your doing the one thing that is most important, doing your own testing. No matter what the “experts” say your own testing in the best answer. In general MDF does not need to be sanded to get good adhesion. Over the years I see some MDF that appears a little glossy and have sanded those sheets. Its been a while since Ive seen any MDF like this.

Thanks for the answer. ... And I'm really enjoying the exploring the things my Compact 300 and pressing bag make possible.
