Subject : White powder residue on raw veneer -- efflorescence

I have some East Indian Rosewood veneer that I'm going to use for a table top and it has a white, powdery residue on it. I've seen this before on some Padauk and after a light sanding it disappears... only to appear again later if left unfinished. The powdery substance will occur in some areas more than others.

I can't seem to find anything in detail about this and I'm curious if anyone has knowledge of exactly what this is, what causes it and if it has any long-term adverse impact on finishes?

I've seen it too. I wipe with alcohol, then sand, then put the finish on. Doesn't seem to come back once it's finished. Don't know what the actual cause is. Some kind of oxidation I speculate.
